Muco

Muco

Muco is a singer, songwriter and composer whose work feels like a conversation across centuries. Of British-Burundian heritage, his music is shaped by a deep love of language and storytelling, and by a curiosity about how voices from the past can still speak clearly in the present. Rather than treating history as something fixed behind glass, Muco approaches it as living material, ready to be handled, reshaped and shared again.

At the heart of his performances are reimagined medieval folk songs and poetry, sung in Middle and Old English alongside original compositions inspired by myth and folklore. Using his voice and the inanga — a traditional zither from Burundi and Rwanda — he creates a sound that is at once ancient and immediate. The pairing of medieval lyrics with East African instrumentation opens up unexpected emotional spaces, gently challenging ideas of what “traditional” music can be.

Recent projects such as Summer Crossing, Soþlice and Book of Voices reflect Muco’s fascination with how folk traditions travel, overlap and evolve. Lyrics move between Old, Middle and Modern English, as well as French, Swahili and Kirundi, not as an academic exercise but as an act of connection.

At Deer Shed, Muco offers something quietly transporting. Expect a performance that rewards close listening, honours historical voices, and makes them feel vividly present — intimate, thoughtful, and unlike anything else you’ll hear all weekend.
