We presume that Charles doesn't want to swap out the Windsor's in-house jobbing poet upon the death of Elizabeth two, and so Simon Armitage remains poet laureate as well as one third of LYR. LYR stands for Land Yacht Regatta, sounds like wind is required.

Simon Armitage brings the spoken word, whilst the rest of LYR (singer-songwriter Richard Walters and multi-instrumentalist & producer Patrick Pearson) do the more 'conventional' band duties.

'Spoken word music' is interesting isn't it? I think so, even if you don't. Not the rap as such, which is arguably more rhythmic, syncopated, than spoken word. Recent examples of spoken word include Dry Cleaning, and less recently The Blue Aeroplanes - our previous favourite 'this sort of thing'.

There is a lot to go wrong (I think) in this style of music unless you really know what you are doing. I imagine this is because the 'lyrics' are SO exposed.

No such drama here though as you might expect with anyone in the job by royal appointment...!

It's all very well done, great balance between the sung words and spoken ones. Everything is quality. Crisp. Positive. And roaming in subject matter. Plus the music is not a second class relative in all this. "Hey there, hi viz theodolite operator".

LYR is a joy. A joy. Let us forever appreciate this sort of thing, celebrate those amongst us that are not only most observant, but able to write it all down so eloquently.
