Want to feel old, mums and dads? Never mind Deer Shed’s tenth anniversary: ‘A Grand Day Out’, the first in a long line of classic Wallace and Gromit films, turns thirty this year! To celebrate, we’ve invited their master model-makers to Topcliffe, to teach you lot how to make your own model Gromit. We’ll provide the clay, you bring the cheese and crackers!

The Royal Academy of Dance

The Royal Academy of Dance

The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) is one of the world's best and most influential dance education organisations. Their musical theatre workshop will offer the chance to sing and dance along to the music and choreography from Matilda, the West End sensation adapted from Roald Dahl’s famous children’s story. No prior singing or dancing experience required!

Bradford School of Art – RSC

Bradford School of Art – RSC

Royal Shakespeare Company is one of the most celebrated theatre companies in the UK, with its home in Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare. They’ve teamed up with Bradford School of Art to offer acting workshops, themed round the great English playwright’s work. Will we discover the next Ian McKellen or Judi Dench at Deer Shed 10?

Deer Shed Comedy School

Deer Shed Comedy School

Over the years, the comedy line-up at Deer Shed has grown exponentially. It seems there are as many comedy buffs in the Deer Shed audience as on the Deer Shed team! As a result, we’ve launched the Deer Shed Comedy School, brand new for 2019. We don’t just want to nurture the next generation of comedy fans – we want to nurture the next generation of comedians and performers, too.

Barbara Nice Comedy Class

Barbara Nice Comedy Class

After her recent triumphant appearance on Britain’s Got Talent, Baarbara Nice has gone from being Deer Shed’s favourite hilarious housewife to being the nation’s favourite! Barbara – aka legendary comedian Janice Connolly – will teach young Deer Shedders all about comic timing, taking on hecklers and generally being the funniest person in the room.

Bright Buoy Productions Clowning Class

Bright Buoy Productions Clowning Class

Over the years, Luke and Christian have amazed the Deer Shed audience with their unique clowning shows, including their 2018 David Attenborough parody ‘Blue Planet III’ and this year’s Planet Earth III! The Big Top laugh-o-meter is never more off the scale than when Bright Buoy Productions take the stage, and they’ll be spilling all the secrets of their clowning act in this brilliant workshop.

Mad Etiquette – Funny Theatre Class

Mad Etiquette – Funny Theatre Class

Join the invincible Captain Cauliflower and his faithful companion Marvin from the award-winning Mad Etiquette team on an unforgettable adventure to learn the art of extreme on-stage silliness! After this workshop, you’ll be ready to make your Edinburgh Festival debut right away!

Orange Shade Productions Film Dance-along

Orange Shade Productions Film Dance-along

Our friends over at Orange Shade Productions specialise in maximising audience enjoyment of our favourite musical classics and newest box office hits. Last year we were playing fast and loose with noise curfews when they put The Greatest Showman on the box, and you lot absolutely sang your hearts out! This year, we’re taking the interactive film experience to the next level, with a dance-along workshop of a secret film we know Deer Shedders will love.

Becky Owens Pop up Choir

Becky Owens Pop up Choir

Singing is so good for the soul. Aside from the wonderful social aspect, singing in a choir can be one of the most rewarding musical experiences going. In this pop-up choir workshop, Becky Owens will bring together Deer Shedders of all skill levels and, in no time at all, turn them into the most magical choir North Yorkshire has to offer!

Deer Shed Jam Sessions

Deer Shed Jam Sessions

Ever come away from a gig feeling inspired to create your own songs or pick up a guitar? That’s how we hope at least some kids at Deer Shed feel! And if that is the case, they can wander down to our music workshops to satisfy any creative desires. Menace Beach and Post War Glamour Girls & Sky Larkin – learn songs from the line-up.

Koby Studio

Koby Studio

In recent years, Koby Studio has become the place to be for the Leeds urban dance community. Run by friends and long-term dance partners Sid Raphael, Mimi Moreno and Victor Amango, the studio was described by Leeds List as “the new jewel in Mabgate’s crown”. They provide a community space for people of all ages and backgrounds to learn, practise and embrace dance.

Jane Fonda Aerobics

Jane Fonda Aerobics

Taking influence from those iconic Jane Fonda aerobics videos of the 1980s, the Deer Shed aerobics instructors will be on hand all weekend in the sports field to whip you into shape with their boom boxes and neon Lycra. Festivals aren’t always about getting trollied and watching bands, you know? Well, they almost always are, but this is a great fitness break from the festival fun.

Yoyo

Yoyo

Other than the Rubik’s cube, is there a more iconic classic toy than the yoyo? You may have the basics down, but very few yo-yo-ers we’ve encountered have mastered impressive tricks like ‘walk the dog’, ‘the creeper’ and ‘around the corner’. Try your hand on our bulk buy of yo-yos, before showing off your new skills around Baldersby Park.

Air Guitar Olympics

Air Guitar Olympics

Air guitar-ing has long been a tradition for the audience at Deer Shed Festival. Ever felt like you just need to strike a power stance and start strumming along to an ace tune like there’s no tomorrow? Anna Calvi shredding on the Main Stage will do that to you! For the first time in history, we’re launching the Deer Shed Air Guitar Olympics. Think you can beat the little man in the picture? You’ve got some competition!

Comics with Alex Oddball

Comics with Alex Oddball

Join Alex Collier, cartoonist from off Viz Comics and writer of your favourite cartoons, from Mr Bean, to Danger Mouse and Dennis and Gnasher: Unleashed, as he spills the secrets behind drawing amazingly brilliant drawings, amazingly brilliantly. In a dead good fun workshop, Alex will show how you can create your own awesome comics, filled with bums, underpants, farting and other sophisticated humour. WARNING: May cause Granny’s false teeth to fly out.

Go Fish with Chloe Daykin

Go Fish with Chloe Daykin

Make your own paperback aquarium book and fill it with invented beasts, under the guidance of author Chloe Daykin. Cut, stick, make & draw from scratch a book that is an aquarium that is a book that is an aquarium. There are weird sounds coming out of the water, who’s making them? And why? Be as wild as you want and take home something you’re truly proud of. Every book is as different as its maker.

Bradford School of Art - Paper People

Bradford School of Art - Paper People

“I went to Calais believing that someone there would want to paint and if I could find that one person then I would be useful. What I found was a need for men and boys to make art on a scale that I’d never encountered before.” Paper People is an art project inspired by the Calais 'Jungle' which hopes to blur preconceived ideas of identity by presenting human beings as individual artworks. Led by Suzanne Partridge and Bradford School of Art, Deer Shedders will have the chance to create their own Paper People project and explore the meaning behind the project.

Bradford School of Art - Film Make-up Special Effects

Bradford School of Art - Film Make-up Special Effects

Amaze your friends and freak out your parents after taking part in this realistic film make-up special effects workshop, run by the clever and creative students at Bradford School of Art. Whether you want to look glitzy or gory, you’ll be make-up artist to the stars in no time!

Bradford School of Art - Print Making

Bradford School of Art - Print Making

The amazing students at Bradford School of Art have designed an alternative poster for Deer Shed 10, informed by the Generation XYZ theme. In this workshop, they will show you how to screen print your very own poster, to take home as the perfect Deer Shed souvenir. We recommend pre-booking this workshop as spaces are limited and may fill up quickly.

Bradford School of Art - Big Draw

Bradford School of Art - Big Draw

There’s something special about art that is created in a collaborative way, combining artistic visions and producing something that one mind alone may never have achieved. Join the Bradford School of Art team to make your mark on their big draw, which always becomes one of our best pieces of site art when complete.

Retro Fashion

Retro Fashion

Trends always seem to come back around some time after they first went out of fashion. Apparently, flares are cool again and all the youngsters are now into Friends because Netflix recently introduced them to it. That means you can be sure that ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s chic your dad used to work will be cool again one day… honestly! To prepare for that day, or just to have a good laugh today, you can design and create your very own retro fashion outfit, to flaunt at the one of the day raves or late-night silent disco.

Cine Camera

Cine Camera

The starring actors and bossy film directors might get most of the attention and adulation for their work on the biggest box office hits, but where would they be without the camera operators? Nowhere is the answer – they’d just have some dramatic music and a blank screen! Design and build your own film or TV camera that you can carry around Baldersby Park, documenting the weird and wonderful sights, to launch your career as one of the unsung heroes of the film industry.

Minecraft Box Heads

Minecraft Box Heads

What’s not to love about a world where you can make pretty much anything your heart desires? Take inspiration from the characters in the much-loved game Minecraft to create our very own unique box head! You have full creative control, and we absolutely love seeing the different box heads floating around the festival site.

Cardboard Retro TV

Cardboard Retro TV

In an age of ultra-thin screens, some members of Gen Z and younger could be forgiven for not fully appreciating the wonders of the box! As revolutionary for the older generations as an iPhone to a millennial. Some super sleek devices might be the in-thing, but a retro TV is iconic. After building and kitting out our cardboard retro TVs, you get to decide what’s on. The perfect stage for your brand-new sock puppets!

Cardboard Guitars

Cardboard Guitars

The cardboard guitars workshop is an institution at Deer Shed. We’ve lost count of how many kids have built an axe fit for shredding royalty. This year, in Anna Calvi, we are actually in the presence of a guitar goddess and what better tribute than every kid in Baldersby Park cardboard guitar-ing along with her? Choose your guitar’s body shape, colour and mod cons before rocking out in front of the Main Stage.

Cardboard Shields

Cardboard Shields

The shield. A classic piece of battle kit that often gets overlooked in favour of a cool sword. If you’ve seen the film 300 you’ll know how undervalued a shield can be, as they use a Testudo formation (a fancy phrase for “holding your shield above your head so you look like a tortoise”) to withstand many bigger armies, against all the odds. Choose your own unique colour scheme, pattern and emblem. Gerard Butler’s gonna have some competition.

Sock Puppets

Sock Puppets

I can’t remember a bigger hit with the kids at Deer Shed than the introduction of sock wrestling in the sports arena last year. James Acaster was even met with heckles of “SOCKS” during his headline Big Top performance! So why stop there with the sock mania? As well as being lovely companions for your hand, creating your very own unique sock puppet could be the first step to becoming the next Nina Conti – Deer Shed’s favourite ventriloquist.

Friendship Bracelets

Friendship Bracelets

Nothing says BFFL quite like a classic friendship bracelet. Whether you make a bracelet for someone special in your family or a close friend, they’ll know they’re stuck with you for life when you give it to them. Besides, you know too much! Pick from our selection of wool and cotton yarn to create a unique gift for your bezzie.

Bead Jewellery

Bead Jewellery

Swarovski is, of course, our jewellery brand of choice, thanks for asking. But, for those nights out that are a little less formal, we tend to pick a piece from our bead jewellery collection, having made many in the Deer Shed crafty workshops over the years. Be the belle of the ball, without breaking the bank!

Shaker Style Beach Huts

Shaker Style Beach Huts

Some of our favourite memories are those of family beach holidays, swimming in the sea, and struggling to get dry and de-sanded behind a towel whilst mum also de-sanded the sandwiches. Wouldn’t it be lovely to have your very own beach hut to change in and shelter from the wind? Whilst we can't stretch to one of those, we have taken inspiration from our Shaker friends to make these simple yet beautifully scented, ornamental beach huts.

Driftwood Art

Driftwood Art

Driftwood is the perfect blank canvas for your artistic vision. A good job, too, because we’ve collected loads of the stuff from numerous walks along the beach. Choose your colours of paint and create a beautiful design, personalised with your own name. Driftwood art looks amazing in any room around the house and everyone will think you’ve been shopping in one of those posh art galleries!

Bird Puppets

Bird Puppets

If the nature walks and birdlife in The Wilderwild leave you feeling inspired, take a stroll to the workshop tents to make your very own simple-to-make paper bird hand puppets.

Wise Owls

Wise Owls

Owls are the wisest birds in the land. They’re also, in our humble opinion, the most beautiful and rewarding to hear and spot on your walks out in nature. Sometimes, though, the British weather just isn’t kind to us birdwatchers. Using our upcycled materials, you can ensure there’s always one in sight, by creating your own wise owl to decorate your home with. Twit-t-whoop!

Pipe Cleaner Super Heroes

Pipe Cleaner Super Heroes

Comic book heroes play a big part in many a kid’s childhood and it’s always hard to choose a favourite. Because of their sentimental value, some of the memorabilia can be a bit on the pricey side. Whether you love Spiderman or Storm, Batman or Wonder Woman, you can design your very own super hero action figure with our pipe cleaners and various other materials.

Clay

Clay

Over the years, thousands of clay sculptures or models have been moulded in Baldersby Park. Because you can shape clay into pretty much anything your heart desires, it’s always relevant to our theme – handy! What retro object captures your imagination most?

Wishing Tree

Wishing Tree

Speaking as someone who still has a CD player in their car, it’d be lovely to say there will always be a market for albums distributed on compact disc. Other than while driving around in my old banger, though, our uses for CDs seems to be coming to an end. Fortunately, you can write your wildest wishes on our old collection of CDs, before adding it to the Deer Shed wishing tree.

Lino Printing

Lino Printing

Sarah and Liz, two of our trusted artists in residence, are returning to Baldersby Park to teach Deer Shedders the fine art of lino painting, a delightful method of printmaking. Carve your design into the lino, before imprinting it onto a canvas and watch your creation come to life!

Mono Printing

Mono Printing

Mono printing is a very simple process, with a beautiful end product. Create your image with our range of materials, before covering them in ink and printing them onto a blank canvas. The first step towards becoming professional printmakers, like our Sarah and Liz.

Calligraphy

Calligraphy

Have you ever found yourself admiring the numerous hand-written signs around Baldersby Park? Whether you’re checking out the schedules outside each tent or following the arrows towards The Wilderwild, each sign will have been written by our very own calligraphy expert, Margaret Jones. Join Margaret to learn the basics. Please note, this workshop has limited spaces so head to the Orphic Arts tent on Saturday morning to book your place.

Sloemotion Gin Tasteshop

Sloemotion Gin Tasteshop

You’d be hard pressed to find any adults in Baldersby Park who would say no to supping some free gin - particularly when that gin is distilled by our favourite purveyors of fine juniper juice, Sloemotion. Their team invite you to drop by their famous Deer Shed Cocktail Tipi to learn more about distilling and take part in an informal tasting workshop on all things gin and sloe!

Stain Glass Sun Catchers

Stain Glass Sun Catchers

When the sun shines on a sun catcher, it can project the most amazing patterns your mind’s eye can conjure! With the expert help of stain-glass artist Janet Fraser, you can choose a prepared glass square from a wide selection of coloured glass and learn how to copper foil, solder and walk away with a lovely sun catcher. Participants must be aged 9+.

Circus Skills

Circus Skills

The mind simply boggles when you see a clown using a unicycle to ride across a tiny tight rope with seemingly minimal effort! Ok, we may not be teaching you anything that extreme, but we’re more than capable of teaching Deer Shedders how to juggle, throw custard pies at bad guys, spin some plates on a stick and just generally look like a complete clown in our circus workshop!

Hula Hoopers

Hula Hoopers

The Deer Shed Hoola Hoop Party proves anything is possible through gravity-defying stunts and mind-bending hula moves. Try your hips at some awesome tricks you never even knew were possible – just don’t let dad get his tummy stuck!

Shaving Foam Marbling

Shaving Foam Marbling

In case you hadn’t noticed, making beautiful crafty creations out of random household objects, tools and materials is kinda our thing. Learn how to make marbling patterns, a mesmerising art form which is both a creative and therapeutic, from your dad’s old shaving foam!

Expressive Painting

Expressive Painting

Expressive painting is an art form created by using colour and the marks made by the paint brush and painting knife rather than blending them. The idea isn’t to end up with a perfect, glossy photograph-like painting but to celebrate the process and tools used. Between you and me, that means you don’t have to be a highly skilled painter to be a part of this workshop – all skill levels welcome!

Henna

Henna

As they enter the rebellious phase, every kid will say they want a tattoo at some point. Henna tattoos offer them that very opportunity, though the temporary nature of henna means they won’t have to endure the “life of regret” that every parent forewarns of!
