Under 5s

Fun stuff and practical stuff

We get asked quite a lot what Deer Shed provides for the peace and well-being of our under 5 audience. Take a look at our 2019 offering...

Meadow Sensory Tent

Meadow Sensory Tent

There is so much going on at the Deer Shed Festival that sometimes you might need a little retreat from the bustling arena. Imagine the most serene scene you possibly can, and you might arrive at a place nearly as relaxing as our Meadow Sensory Tent. Here, you can take part in some yoga or just put your feet up while the young people play with many sensory delights!

Teeny Beans Tent

Teeny Beans Tent

The place to be for busy kids. The Teeny Beans Tent will play host to a variety of different activities, including hosting a parent and baby yoga class, junk modelling, pipe cleaner pet-making, colouring sheets, collage making, musical mayhem, sensory play, messy play and much more!

Pig Sty

Pig Sty

Maybe we should come up with a slightly less offensive name for this area, designed for our littlest friends who just want to go a bit crazy. We fill a small area with loads of hay, toys and geed up kids, and simply watch the magic happen. We won’t let them wallow in any mud, but even kids need to blow off some steam sometimes.

Bubble Rave

Bubble Rave

Forget the Johnny Marrs, the Alison Golfrapps and the Billy Braggs that have all graced Baldersby Park with their presence over the years. The biggest celebrities at Deer Shed each year always seem to whoever we invite along to blow bubbles all around the site. Ok, we get it: you lot LOVE bubbles. And because we LOVE you, you can join us in the Teeny Beans tent for the best bubble rave of the year!

Dream Time Baby Massage

Dream Time Baby Massage

It’s tough to be a baby. Spending all day eating, crying, burping, laughing and sleeping isn’t easy you know? Dream Time Baby Massage will run workshops on how to maximise your baby’s holistic happiness. In their workshops, singing soothes and brings on language development, dancing brings balance and joy, yoga leads to muscle development and flexibility and the massages aid relaxation and bonding.

Mini Rave

Mini Rave

Do you love a boogie? Does your baba love a boogie? Well, we have the perfect Deer Shed pastime! We’ve seen some under 5s in the late night silent discos at Deer Shed before, but most are sound asleep by that time. For those who can’t quite keep their eyes open long enough to rave until the wee hours, the under 5s area will host a mini rave. Don your sunglasses and neon wands, kids.

Thula Mama

Thula Mama

Join Jenny Cook for uplifting and magical accapella harmony singing at one of her soulful and inspiring Thula Mama workshops. Thula Mama is an informal singing group for women and their babies from bump to 12 months. They sing songs and lullabies from a variety of traditions and cultures around the world, mostly with a theme relating to families or babies, mixing gentle lullabies with upbeat songs. No experience is necessary as everything is taught by ear and everyone is welcome.

Dinosaurs Love Fairy Cakes

Dinosaurs Love Fairy Cakes

Dinosaurs Love Fairy Cakes will be bringing an array of roar-some toys for some imaginative, stimulating and sensory play time in the Teeny Beans tent. Amy and Zoe will welcome you in, make you feel at home and even make you a brew and a slice of cake if that’s what you need while your little stompers play. The aim of Dinosaurs Love Fairy Cakes is to provide a space where parents can relax and socialise whilst the kids play to their heart’s content.

Zen Warriors Sensory Sessions

Zen Warriors Sensory Sessions

“If every 8 year old in the world is taught meditation, we will eliminate violence from the world within a generation” - Dalai Lama. Kimberley Barrett lives by this quote from the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people and it inspired her to create Zen Warriors. Focusing on children’s mindfulness and meditation from an early age, Kimberley will lead workshops on maximising baby's happiness.

Soft Play

Soft Play

You know what you're going to get with a soft play area: fun slides, cubes, and other shapes for the little ones to spend hours of fun playing on. Sometimes we wonder if we should give up with the bands and comedy and simply host a giant soft play area festival!

NCT (National Childbirth Trust)

NCT (National Childbirth Trust)

A bastion of baby care, the NCT return once more to offer help, advice and general welfare for all your baby needs. They have their own dedicated tent, clearly marked and located near the Big Top tent. We’re very proud of our longstanding partnership with such a caring and generous charity as the NCT.

Song Box

Song Box

It’s no secret that the Deer Shed team firmly believe introducing kids to music from an early age is amazing for their development. In fact, recent surveys have suggested that the younger a child is when they are taken to a live music event, the more likely they are to try new activities as they get older! Song Box, a local York business, firmly agree with us and aim to bring people of all ages together through shared music making and creativity.

Good Times and Bath Times

Good Times and Bath Times

We know bath time in pre-schooler households can often be on the more challenging end of parenting. We hope to alleviate some of that stress by having a big baby bath time. Let your baby socialise with others as they wiggle and jiggle their way to squeaky clean, all thanks to the NCT and a bulk buy of garden trugs.

Ear Defenders

Ear Defenders

Ever left a loud gig or party with that incessant ringing in your ears? You might recover in a day or two if you’re lucky, but little ears are much more fragile. Our high-fidelity PA speakers produce some glorious sounds, but some of them might upset those little lugholes. If the kids don’t already have ear protection, make sure you pick up a pair of ear defenders from our merchandise tent to keep those high frequencies at bay.

Soul Sensory

Soul Sensory

Soul Sensory was dreamt up by a mother who has spent many years thinking of ways to help her child and others who have autism access exciting events, without the risk of sensory overload. The sensory activities available here are carefully thought out to provide calming activities, like hand-crafted wooden letter painting, a giant chalkboard and a Duplo building table for little, fidgety hands.

Messy play

Messy play

Messy play doesn’t get much messier than this, and what’s more you’re not responsible for cleaning it up! There will be lots of large sheets of paper on the floor, with lots of lovely colours of safe poster paint – what happens next is entirely up to the young creative minds who are free to use stampers, sponges and different parts of their body to make an almighty mess. Every toddler’s dream!

Sand Pit

Sand Pit

Eight tons of play sand undercover and exclusively reserved for our younger audience. Build a monster, a castle, or anything else the sand and your imagination will allow. One toddler was once so excited their sandcastle stood up unaided that they did an impromptu victory dance - awesome! We're very pro-impromptu victory dances at the Deer Shed Festival!

Microwave

Microwave

Yes, Deer Shed hosts some of the best street food vendors mankind has ever tasted, but try giving a korma from Ghandi’s Flip-Flop or a steak flatbread from Allotment Catering to a 1-year old – not ideal! We will offer an abundance of microwaves so you can keep the tots well fed with food that suits them best.

Bottle Sterilising

Bottle Sterilising

As parents ourselves, we know how important it is to have peace of mind when feeding your baby. That’s why we provide bottle sterilising facilities: to ensure no bugs can make their way into any tummies.

High Chairs

High Chairs

Babies can be just a little bit demanding, right? Often if they're not sat in their high chair thrones, they’ll kick up a fuss or make more of a mess. Worry not: babies are treated like royalty at the Deer Shed Festival and no little prince or princess that wants one will be without a high chair!

Changing Area

Changing Area

Picture the scene: you and the family are at the main stage, all moving and shaking to Ezra Furman, when suddenly an unsavoury smell emanates from the little one's nappy. Luckily, our changing area is always just around the corner and you'll likely be back in time to hear Love You So Bad – how's that for a crowd pleaser?

Nappies

Nappies

If you’re bringing a toddler to Baldersby Park this July, it would be a total nightmare realising you'd left the nappies in the car or – far worse – at home! These things happen, but Deer Shed has you and your baby’s backs covered (literally) with biodegradable, eco-friendly nappies on sale in both the campsite and arena.

Playdough

Playdough

Playdough is a timeless classic. No amount of technological progression will ever eradicate our seemingly primal desire to squash, squeeze, roll and mould the magical stuff. Our mountain of playdough will keep tiny hands and minds occupied for hours on end!

Mini Draw

Mini Draw

You’ve heard of a big draw – a huge collaborative drawing that anyone can contribute to with amazing end results. In the interest of inclusiveness, we’ve created a mini draw workshop for our littlest friends to take part in. The results of these collaborative efforts are always a joy to behold, and we’ll be displaying the mini draw proudly in Baldersby Park for all to see.

Mini Mosaic

Mini Mosaic

In the same spirit as the mini draw, the mini mosaic gives every under 5 in Baldersby Park the chance to create a very special, collaborative work of art. A mosaic is arguably a good artistic representation of Deer Shed: an assortment of random things stuck together to make one big, spectacular thing that really shouldn’t work, but totally does!

Musical Shakers

Musical Shakers

This drop-in workshop gives little ones chance to shake, rattle, and bang to their heart's content. Including rhymes, songs, and a variety of instruments, this is the magical, musical moment every under-5 has been looking for.

Mobile Sling Hire

Mobile Sling Hire

There's so much on offer at Deer Shed 10 that you might have to undertake some light walking. Of course, this can quite quickly become heavy walking if you have your hands full with one or more children. Parent Deer Shedders can therefore hire mobile slings from NCT to make your festival experience as easy on the arms and legs as possible.

Sing and Sign

Sing and Sign

Join us for a fun musical adventure under the sea whilst learning some great signs useful for the seaside, bath time or for when sharing your favourite beachy book! 'Sing and Sign' is the U.K.'s original baby signing programme, informing and delighting parents and babies across the country for nearly two decades. Expect singing, signing, boats, bubbles, smiles, giggles and a very special, sea faring, cat called Jessie!

Storytime with Jenna Drury

Storytime with Jenna Drury

Jenna Drury specialise in multi-sensory story making with young children, empowering them to find their voice, stretch their imagination and discover new possibilities through story and play. She has enchanted children with her magical stories at Deer Shed for some years now, so much so that the under 5s would be lost without her!

Create Together Sensory Sessions

Create Together Sensory Sessions

A delightful drop-in sensory space for little ones and their families run by the wonderful art therapists at Create Together. They offer a comfy, chilled out space which will always have loads of sensory materials and toys with textures, lights and sounds. Each day they’ll build a totally unique sensory world tray themed around the sea and simple craft activities ideal for little ones. Create wave makers, oceans-in-a-bottle and handprint sea creatures!
