
The Breadwinner
Parvana is an 11 year old girl living with her family in Taliban-controlled Kabul, where women are forbidden from going outside without a male relative. When her father is unjustly thrown in jail, Parvana decides to disguise herself as a boy in order to provide for her family.
Premiering to critical acclaim at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival and nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 90th Academy Awards, The Breadwinner is an arresting and inspiring tale of how one headstrong young girl’s bravery changes the fate of her family forever.

This programme of short films produced by the Yorkshire and North East Film Archives explores the history of pressing social and political issues including gender equality, homelessness and poverty, isolation and climate justice. A rollercoaster of emotions, this screening is sometimes sad but full of hope to; asking us questions about ourselves, our communities, our society and what we can learn from the past.

Nature Matters is an eye-opening collection of shorts handpicked from the Yorkshire and North East Film Archive; each introduced by a member of the archive team to explore different aspects of our changing climate.
With over 70,000 items in the collection, including film reels, video tapes and digital material, this Nature Matters screening will open up important conversation about the natural world around us and showcase how the National Lottery Heritage Funded archive project intends to make their extraordinary collection accessible for everyone.

YFA presents Animal Animations by Shelia Graber
A colourful and lively screening of short animations from self-taught South Shields animator Sheila Graber. From pastel to pixel, Sheila has produced over 100 films from her home-based studio, covering a wide range of subjects, from art to cats and forest floors to sea beds in this beautiful series of nature-themed shorts.
Produced by the Yorkshire and North East Film Archive, Animal Animations is part of a collection of over 70,000 items of original film, video tape, and digital material which the archive carefully preserves in order to make these extraordinary collection accessible for everyone.
