Deer Shed Base Camp Poster Deer Shed Base Camp Poster

Welcome to Deer Shed Base Camp, the 2020 socially distanced family camping weekender!

Base Camp has now SOLD OUT.

What is Base Camp?

  • Base Camp is not a festival - Base Camp is a 3 night weekend of socially distanced camping. We are still not allowed to have social gatherings, consequently there will be no stages, no organised group activities at Base Camp. Entertainment over the weekend will be delivered by our onsite radio station, Base Camp FM, and the programme will include live music, live comedy, all sorts. The programme will be announced prior to the weekend. You might need to invest in a battery powered FM radio if you don't have one already. We are working hard to maximise the sense of community and togetherness over the weekend within the guidelines.
  • Camping is all about space - we have upgraded pitch sizes since our first announcement to 15m x 15m. Each pitch has its own loo included in the price. Our loos have on board water for washing. Each pitch is for a family group that normally lives together. You can book a pitch next to your friends pitch. A pitch is for a car plus tent OR a car plus caravan OR a campervan. Caravans can have an awning and campervans can have extra tents. Electric hook-up is available only for caravans and campervans.
  • Facilities in Baldersby Park - we are using 35 acres of Baldersby Park, half for camping pitches arranged in a grid and half to roam free in (play frisbee, football, cricket within your social group - bring your games clobber!). We will have limited food and drink vendors (coffee, crêpes, pizza, hotdogs) the emphasis is on bringing food, drink and alcohol for your own consumption from home. There will be no bars. You can have a BBQ and also following our guidelines you can bring one well behaved pooch. You are free to come and go as you please from Baldersby Park and explore North Yorkshire.

What's on at Base Camp? Your FM radio, that's what!

Broadcasting live from the actual deer shed (lower case) on Base Camp FM, we have some Deer Shed comedy favourites including Justin Moorhouse, Barbara Nice, Tom Binns, Scott Bennett, Helen Duff, Matt Hoss and Katie Pritchard. Needless to say, none have done a live broadcast to a campsite before - hi-de-hi Baldersby Park!

Music, too, in the form of live performances over the radio waves from The Howl & The Hum, Shadowlark, Low Hummer, Mt. Misery, Serious Sam Barrett, Andrew Cushin, Jodie Nicholson, The Laurelles and last but not least Hyde Park Brass Band. As well as live music some stella DJ sets are certainly a given from Rory Hoy, Across The Tracks plus late night and early morning Ambient Zone sets curated by Digitonal's Andy Dobson.

We have loads of spoken word too, including BBC's Nick Ahad talking Baldersby Park trees with Gardener's Question Time Matthew Wilson, Sunday papers review with Dave Simpson and Robyn Vinter, bedtime stories with Mud Pie Arts and Deer Shed poet in residence Henry Raby. We've also been making some pre-recorded shows including 'A Fallow Deer - the Deer Shed Story' which takes you through the past, present and future of the festival.

We have a meditation and movement workshop with PAUSE (AKA Alice Evans & Angharad Jones) to loosen up mind and body for the day ahead. We might even have an impromptu dog show...

Of course, you are free to come and go over the weekend. Places to visit that we would recommend include Brimham Rocks, Fountains Abbey and lovely walks setting off from Sutton Bank visitors centre. Please read these websites to check on latest COVID-19 guidance before you set off.

We hope of course that you choose to stick around in the daytime. Be sure to bring all of your sports stuff from home. Unfortunately the COVID risk assessment on our swingball sets made us weep so they are staying in the shed. Sorry about that, but probably for the best!

Now let's talk bicycles. If your kids want to bring their bikes, we can't think of any reason not to, especially ones that will lock safely in the car. If you are a lycra road warrior we have a couple of routes (#1 and #2) which a kind soul has put together if you fancy rolling out. If you're more of a mountain biking sort, speak to us over the weekend and we'll point you in the right direction (taking into account your skill level!)

Any questions as always give us a shout on info@deershedfestival.com.

And whilst on the subject of questions we have had quite a few questions about what Base Camp is(!) so it is worth restating a few things! See below.

How to find Base Camp

The post code for Baldersby Park is YO7 3BZ and this will get you close. However, we are not using the usual car park entrance. If you are coming from the A1(M) you need to go past the usual festival car park entrance and take the next left towards Topcliffe. If you are coming via Topcliffe go over the bridge and turn right as usual and the Base Camp entrance is on the right after the entrance to the school. Which ever direction you come from the entrance is marked.

If you are into your What3Words you can find us at pies obstruct dampen. We would recommend that you download the What3Words app to be sure of a stress free arrival!

Base Camp opens at 12pm on Friday 24th July and closes at 12pm on Monday 27th July. Please do not arrive before 12pm on Friday.

Things to bring

Of course, bring all the usual camping clobber but here are some things to bring specific to Base Camp.

  • A battery powered FM radio (tuned to 87.70 MHz!) You can use your car radio of course but you'll need to keep turning on the engine to charge the battery. We have jump leads :)
  • Food and drink. We will have 3 food vendors and ice-cream onsite but there is not enough provision for you to eat out for every meal. There will be no bars.
  • It would help us if you could bring some water from home in a large container. We will have fresh drinking water but it might be slow going with queues due to extra COVID precautions.
  • Hand sanitiser and face masks (at your discretion.)
  • Footballs, frisbies, cricket bats, tennis rackets, playing cards, you get the idea.
  • Bicycles, but have a think about keeping them safe either in your car or attached to it somehow.
  • BBQs that are off the ground so as not to damage the grass.
  • If your hound is joining you for the weekend, dog lead, poo bags plus a dog stake to stop them wandering whilst on your pitch.

Site Rules

We have conceived Base Camp to be safer than a trip to the supermarket regarding COVID infection but please read these site rules carefully.

  • You must not attend the weekend if they have been experiencing Covid symptoms or have been near anyone with Covid symptoms in the last 14 days.
  • Practice social distancing in communal areas and wash hard or sanitise regularly to prevent the spread of the virus.
  • Respect each others space, including our staff, do not wander into anyone else's pitch without their consent - some of our audience will be isolating.
  • Please do not wander beyond the boundaries of Baldersby Park. The usual festival sports ground and Wilderwild area are out of bounds.
  • Outside of the main campsite area (for example the dog walking area) has had grazing animals 2 weeks before the weekend. Please bear this in mind and wash hands after visiting.
  • We will have a 11pm noise curfew, please respect your neighbours who might not be as full of beans.
  • A pitch is for a family who normally live together.
  • Social distancing must still apply in accordance with current government guidelines.
  • Base Camp is intended as a family event and has only been targeted at a Deer Shed audience. Each pitch must be occupied by at least one responsible adult over 25 years of age. We reserve the right to eject any campers who are not behaving in the spirit of the event.
  • Only Base Camp family campers will be allowed onsite, sorry no external visitors who have not bought their own pitch.
  • We encourage you to wash up on your pitch and dispose of waste water in the tanks provided close-by, rather than empty on the ground.
  • Your car must be parked within your pitch, there will be no communal car parking.
  • Strictly no glass to be brought onsite please.
  • You can bring one well-behaved dog per pitch. However your hound must be kept on a lead at all times except in our dog walking field. All dog waste must be picked up and deposited in the bins. You should invest in one of those screw in dog camping stakes for sure :)
  • You can have a BBQ if it is above the ground and doesn't spoil the grass. Disposable BBQs must be off the ground. If you have a camping stove in a tent the maximum cylinder size is 2.7kg in gas weight.
  • If one of your party is suspected to have contracted the COVID-19 virus please get in touch with us asap to discuss options.

Questions?

If you have any question before next weekend as always please get in touch on info@deershedfestival.com. Over the weekend we will have a mobile number for questions which will be 07377 871670, please do not call this number outside of the Base Camp weekend but use our email instead.

Ilkley Brewery

On a lighter note we are teaming up again with Ilkley Brewery to offer beer in cans and mini-casks delivered free to Baldersby Park for you to collect upon your arrival.

Visit the Ilkley Online Shop, order your beer in a can (via the bottled beer page) or a mini-cask, enter the discount code BASECAMP for free delivery to Base Camp, Baldersby Park, Topcliffe, YO3 3BZ (which is the delivery address you should enter).
