Welcome to Deer Shed Base Camp, the 2020 socially distanced family camping weekender!

The government guidelines announced on June 23rd, and due to come into force on July 4th, have given the green light for Base Camp!

If you are interested in attending please read all of this page to understand all of the ins and outs, we have tweaked a few things.

What is Base Camp?

  • Base Camp is not a festival - Base Camp is a 3 night weekend of socially distanced camping. We are still not allowed to have social gatherings, consequently there will be no stages, no organised group activities at Base Camp. Entertainment over the weekend will be delivered by our onsite radio station, Base Camp FM, and the programme will include live music, live comedy, all sorts. The programme will be announced prior to the weekend. You might need to invest in a battery powered FM radio if you don't have one already. We are working hard to maximise the sense of community and togetherness over the weekend within the guidelines.
  • Camping is all about space - we have upgraded pitch sizes since our first announcement to 15m x 15m. Each pitch has its own portaloo included in the price. Our portaloos have on board water for washing. Each pitch is for a family group that normally lives together. You can book a pitch next to your friends pitch. A pitch is for a car plus tent OR a car plus caravan OR a campervan. Caravans can have an awning and campervans can have extra tents. Electric hook-up is available only for caravans and campervans.
  • Facilities in Baldersby Park - we are using 35 acres of Baldersby Park, half for camping pitches arranged in a grid and half to roam free in (play frisbee, football, cricket within your social group - bring your games clobber!). We will have limited food and drink vendors (coffee, crêpes, pizza) the emphasis is on bringing food, drink and alcohol for your own consumption from home. There will be no bars. You can have a BBQ and also following our guidelines you can bring one well behaved pooch. You are free to come and go as you please from Baldersby Park and explore North Yorkshire.

Base Camp has now SOLD OUT.

When we initially asked our Deer Shed audience to express their interest in Base Camp, we had enough interest to fill 4 weekends, except that everyone wanted to come on the first weekend! Our bad regarding this, apologies. So we now have one weekend, the original Deer Shed 11 weekend with a little more capacity. All good.

Any questions as always give us a shout on

And whilst on the subject of questions we have had quite a few questions about what Base Camp is(!) so it is worth restating a few things! See below.

Site rules and other important stuff

This is our evolving set of site rules and other things to be aware of...

  • The site is open from midday on the Friday to midday on the Monday.
  • A single 15m x 15m pitch is for a family who normally live together.
  • You can book a pitch next to other family groups, but social distancing must still apply in accordance with whatever guidelines are in place at the time of the event.
  • Each family group will have its own portaloo with washing facilities (our loos have a sink and water onboard). There will be no communal toilets or sanitation facilities. At the time of writing we do not consider showers to be viable on safety grounds.
  • Base Camp is intended as a family event and has only been targeted at a Deer Shed audience. Each pitch must be occupied by at least one responsible adult over 25 years of age. We reserve the right to eject any campers who are not behaving in the spirit of the event.
  • Base Camp FM will shut down at 11pm every night, this is our noise curfew onsite and we ask you to be considerate to your neighbours after this time and keep noise to a minimum.
  • Only Base Camp family campers will be allowed onsite, sorry no external visitors who have not bought their own pitch.
  • Potable water will be available onsite from a central point and will be dispensed by our staff to your container. However to avoid queues and unnecessary contact consider bringing water from home.
  • We encourage you to wash up on your pitch and dispose of waste water in the tanks provided close-by, rather than empty on the ground.
  • Your car must be parked within your pitch, there will be no communal car parking.
  • We will have limited food and drink providers onsite (probably coffee and pizza). There will be no bars, the idea is to bring food and drink from home including any alcohol for your own personal consumption.
  • Strictly no glass to be brought onsite please, sheep and glass don't mix well.
  • You can come and go over the weekend and are free to enjoy all that North Yorkshire has to offer within the restrictions in place at the time of the event as well as enjoy other activities that Deer Shed will provide onsite - these will be socially distanced.
  • You can bring one well-behaved dog per pitch. However the hound must be kept on a lead at all times except in our dog walking field. All dog waste must be picked up and deposited in the bin. You should invest in one of those screw in dog camping stakes for sure :)
  • You can have a BBQ if it is above the ground and doesn't spoil the grass for our next weekend. Disposable BBQs must be off the ground. If you have a camping stove in a tent the maximum cylinder size is 2.7kg in gas weight.
  • If the event is cancelled for ANY reason you will receive a full refund.
  • If one of your party is suspected to have contracted the COVID-19 virus and you let us by midday on the Tuesday before the weekend you will receive a full refund.
  • It is your responsibility to follow the social distancing guidelines in place at the time of the event.
  • The event will have 24 hour security, fire and medical cover.

A final word...

It is probably not a secret that 2020 has been a disaster of a year for festivals, and Deer Shed has suffered along with the rest of the independent festival sector. We are a family owned and run business and Kate and I have a big hole in our finances. We have had to make some tough decisions regarding the way Deer Shed will operate in the future, especially around staffing.

However, it could have been worse. We were very grateful so many of our audience decided to hang onto their Deer Shed 11 tickets until 2021, whilst completely understanding the reasons why some might not be able to.

So yes, Base Camp does represent an opportunity for Kate and myself to claw back some income for 2020 and do something good. We hope that you will consider joining us.

Oliver & Kate xx
