Manic Chord presents The Unknown

Manic Chord presents The Unknown

Inspired by 'E.T.' & 'Stranger Things', we've teamed up with Manic Chord Theatre for the second year running to produce an Arts Council England-funded extra-terrestrial family adventure, The Unknown. The show will be premiered in The Wilderwild at Deer Shed Festival 10 before Manic Chord take it on tour around the North. Keep your eyes peeled for our alien app, which will be available to download prior to the festival – the latest in alien detection technology! Parents and their children will be transported to another world. The question is: will they ever return?

New York Brass Band

New York Brass Band

New York Brass are among the most popular brass bands to emerge from Yorkshire in recent years. Described by The Guardian "a must see genre-splitting band" and by Liam Gallagher as having a “great sound” – one of Liam’s more elaborate band reviews – the band, borne from the streets of York, specialise in getting the party started with an ever-growing repertoire of classic pop hits. Almost every Yorkshire show this brass rabble-rousing brass band play sells out, so you better grab your chance to see them at Deer Shed!

Granny Turismo

Granny Turismo

On the surface, this elderly trio may just look like an innocent group of grannies (fun fact, the actual collective noun for a group of grandparents is a ‘widsom’ or a ‘nag’, though I’d prefer to go with a ’gaggle’) – let me tell you, they are anything but! Preferring to race around on their mobility scooters causing pure chaos to the usual retirement pastimes, the Granny Turismo crew are heading to Deer Shed this summer. Who said growing old means settling down?

Brick by Brick – Omni-Science

Brick by Brick – Omni-Science

If you’ve heard of the Internet of Things, it’s quite possible you’ve imagined a world where menial tasks are completed by computers and robots on your behalf at the utterance of a voice command. Alexa was the first step, but now it’s time to meet the future of AI home-assistance. Introducing the all new ‘Omni-Unit’. Faithful, obedient, and hard-working, Omni-Unit is the ideal family bot. Come and meet Sinclair Strata, the unparalleled genius behind this life-changing device. Only by controlling the robot yourself can you truly believe the hype!

The Farce Awakens

The Farce Awakens

In a galaxy far, far away, a grumpy Jedi master, a golden droid and other assorted Star Wars pastiches enact plot lines from the iconic films that have transcended standard generational lines. Join this walkabout act to partake in Jedi training masterclasses, light sabre duels, spaceship races and Princess Liszy (not to be confused with that other princess) giving tutorials on best princess practice, teaching you how to be a bad ass capable of saving the universe.

Johnny White Sculptures

Johnny White Sculptures

Each year, artist-in-residence Johnny White creates a brand new line of sculptures for Deer Shed. His Easter Island bathtubs last year raised the bar, after previously creating a fire and ice machine, various kinetic sculptures and an amazing marble run. This year, Johnny is creating an exhibition exploring the relationship between humans and machines, through these incredible sculptures, titled Human Machines.

Slang Sign

Slang Sign

Created by Steve Hemmingway, Deer Shed’s new site artist, Slang Sign is a huge signpost of the best slang phrases from each generation. Totally bodacious, on fleek, wicked, awesome, OMG - all confusingly pointing in different directions. Each iconic phrase will be hand-painted onto brightly coloured panels made from found wood. After choosing your favourite phrase, follow the direction of its unique panel and discover where in Baldersby Park it leads you to!

Northern Rascals – The Mesmerist

Northern Rascals – The Mesmerist

Northern Rascals is a multi-disciplinary arts company based in Yorkshire. They create magical, thought-provoking dance theatre and perform to a diverse range of audiences. Their latest show, ‘The Mesmerist’, takes place in a land of angels. Through a mixture of dance, clowning and stunning optical illusions, a magical journey of love, loss, hope and adventure is told. In equal parts comedic and poignant, this family show explores the importance of friendship and of reaching out to find the light when the world loses its spark.

Loud Noises Brass Band

Loud Noises Brass Band

Loud Noises are a feisty four-piece brass outfit formed in Leeds some three years ago. The virile combination of gutsy brass playing, a daring repertoire and constant crowd interaction has been repeatedly proven as the ultimate get-up-and-dance party starter. At Deer Shed 10, the likelihood is that Loud Noises will be waiting around pretty much every corner you turn, ready to get your feet tapping and your hips swaying to any one of their classic brass covers.

Feral Arts – Light Field

Feral Arts – Light Field

Visually and sonically captivating, Light Field is an off-grid, participatory installation made of light, people and the sound of light. A field of glowing beacons and sound-emitting lanterns await activation. A multi-part sound-score is gently amplified through kinetically powered lanterns, inviting audiences to both become part of and to alter the ambient art. Simple choreographic instructions open unlimited possibilities for movement and play in this magical light installation.

Magical bones

Magical bones

Widely considered one of the most exciting talents to emerge from the wizarding world in some time, Richard Essien will be dazzling audiences all around Baldersby Park with his walkabout street magic. It isn’t just his magic tricks that will have you gasping in unison though: Richard is also an exceptional break dancer who has worked with the likes of Madonna and Plan B. Performing mind-blowing card tricks already requires some serious sleight of hand skills, but try pulling them off at the same time as a backflip! Now that’s impressive.

Levantes

Levantes

Eleni Edipidi and Bethanie Harrison formed Levantes Dance Theatre over a decade ago. Since then, they have been wowing audiences (unsuspecting and otherwise) with a vast array of perforances that use dance, acrobatics, stunning visuals and their trademark “twin” styling. This colourful duo are returning to Deer Shed 10 after captivating audiences last year with their amazing visual walkabout routines.

Camera Obscura

Camera Obscura

Step inside artist Dan Metcalfe’s Little White Shed of Wonder. Take a moment, sit down, allow your eyes to adjust to the dark and let the wonder of light waves illuminate your senses. No lenses, no tricks, no gimmicks, just doing its thing. Watch carefully as the world outside gradually appears on the screen in front of you. Look even closer – you might spot your dad doing his best dad dance!

The Bean Counter

The Bean Counter

The Bean Counter is an improvised live show for the whole family starring the counting official in a jelly bean counting competition. While it may not sound like the most exciting of jobs, this jelly bean counter, played by Alice May Cooper, has developed a multitude of unusual methods for counting the masses of jelly beans in her jar – a core skill in the industry, surprisingly! They may sound like a bit of a jobsworth, but we can guarantee Deer Shedders will be sharing Alice’s bean-counting obsession in no time at all. Plus, you’ll never lose money at the school summer fair again!

Woodland Gallery

Woodland Gallery

Your mum and dad might have dragged you around many a high-brow art gallery whilst you trudged along next to them, not really all that interested. Sometimes all you need is just a change of scenery to make something that bit more exciting. For Deer Shed 10, we’re building our own Woodland Gallery in The Wilderwild, an exhibition of unique art pieces that connect to the nature surrounding Baldersby Park in different ways.

Busking with The Laurelles

Busking with The Laurelles

One of Thirsk’s fastest emerging bands will perform a special set in the Wilderwild. Comprised of Aidan Tulloch, a young piano and violin prodigy with BBC composing credits already to his name, and Luke Coupland, a deft guitarist and skilled songwriter. If you follow the music to the woods, you might just discover the future of North Yorkshire music!
