Me and My Bee Workshop

Me and My Bee Workshop

Did you know that seventy out of the top one hundred human food crops — which supply about 90 percent of the world’s nutrition — are pollinated by bees? And that populations are declining for 37% of the world’s bee species? That means our fuzzy little friends need our help! Join award-winning theatre company ThisEgg, the creators of the wonderful show Me and My Bee, to do your bit to save the lovely, buzzy bees.

They’re one of the most popular comedy acts among Deer Shedders to ever grace the Big Top stage. Learn how to not-so effortlessly transport a heavy pane of invisible glass, peak over invisible walls, and pretty much any other activity with an invisible object you can conjure up in that fabulous imagination of yours!

Who knows, you might even get to Photoshop yourself into this lovely marine world…

LCC Poster Printing

LCC Poster Printing

Each year, the amazing Leeds City College students design a beautiful poster for the Deer Shed Festival, informed by our unique theme. Their beautiful, limited-edition Wilderwild wolf poster last year made the perfect souvenir, and has become a bit of a collector’s item – anyone know where we can get our hands on a bootleg!? This is a workshop you’ll have to book when you arrive at the festival, as places fill up quickly! We can’t wait to see their nautical-themed print for Deer Shed 9!

LCC Marine Make Over

Our team of special-effects artists are here again with their kit of tools and imagination to perform their make-over magic, as they create all manner of aquatic face and body decorations for you to impress your friends and family. So, whether your penchant is for fish scales or shark fins, come along to the Arty Stuff Tent for your own nautical makeover - but make sure you book early, as it always gets very busy.

LCC Fishy Fridge Magnets

Mould yourself some fishy fridge magnets out of clay and embellish them with all that your imagination will allow, with the help of Leeds City College. It’ll be like that scene in Ghost, but with fewer ghosts and loads more messy kids. Come along, get your hands dirty and take home a brand new addition to your fridge display – all made by your good self.

Sloemotion Gin Tasteshop

Sloemotion Gin Tasteshop

You’d be hard pressed to find any adults in Baldersby Park who would say no to supping some free gin - particularly when that gin is distilled by our favourite purveyors of fine juniper juice, Sloemotion. Their team invite you to drop by their famous Deer Shed Cocktail Tipi to learn more about distilling and take part in an informal tasting workshop on all things gin and sloe!

Liz Flanagan

Liz Flanagan

Liz Flanagan writes for children and teenagers; she is the author of Eden Summer (nominated for the Carnegie Medal) and Cara and the Wizard, as well as the forthcoming Dragon Daughter which will be published in October. Liz will run a wonderful workshop on writing for young people, whilst sharing many of the secrets to her literary success.

Nasty Women Magazines

Nasty Women Magazines

Help those Nasty Women of the North East to create a new kind of children’s magazine! No polite princesses or strong but silent superheroes here. Kids will explore the work of female artists and activists throughout history, learning about how art can change the world. Create word searches, colouring pages, free prizes and cartoon strips with a twist! A selection of work made during these workshops will be included in the “(small but) FIERCE” magazine, which will be launched at the Anti Art Fair in London in October 2018.

Nasty Women: Craftivism

Nasty Women: Craftivism

The Craftivist movement is an informal collection of makers and groups around the world, who use traditional craft skills to “build a better world together”. Help Nasty Women create our own Craftivist “Interruption” – a mini project (often a series of object or actions) that very gently disrupt every day activities and prompts people to think about something a little differently. At the end of the session participants will be asked to take their Interruption out into the festival, before using it to disrupt the world!

Problem Solving Mass Workshop

Problem Solving Mass Workshop

There’s no getting away from it: as a society, we simply don’t talk about mental health enough. Thankfully Problem Solving Booths – pop-up street booths supporting wellbeing and connection in local communities – will make their first ever festival appearance at Deer Shed 9! Be helped, or even be the helper – it really doesn’t matter as long as we’re sharing. Can we set a world record for the most people problem solving together at one time in this mass workshop?

Magic

Magic

Ever wondered how to keep a rabbit in a hat long enough to pull off that classic, old trick? Or just how you never noticed that pesky coin hiding behind your ear until it was pointed out to you? Never mind how to saw your friends in half without needing to protect mum’s new cream carpet. Magicians never reveal their secrets, but that doesn’t mean we can’t!

Aquatic Aerobics (Zumba)

Aquatic Aerobics (Zumba)

Our very own version of those popular Latin-dance fitness classes. These routines are all about constant, high-octane movement – and what moves better than a wave? Join us on a journey through the best aquatic aerobic moves and make waves with the power of your body!

Gary Bridgens – Mass Ukulele Jam

Gary Bridgens – Mass Ukulele Jam

The ukulele is the fastest selling instrument on the planet. It’s no wonder: this workshop is a fun, accessible and easy way to explore music and song writing for participants of almost any age and ability. No need for huge hands like Hendrix: the ukulele’s mini-guitar shape means even those with the littlest of digits can get to grips with its four strings to make a tune!

Circus Workshops

Circus Workshops

The mind simply boggles when you see a clown using a unicycle to ride across a tiny tight rope with seemingly minimal effort! Ok, we may not be teaching you anything that extreme, but we’re more than capable of teaching Deer Shedders how to juggle, throw custard pies at bad guys, spin some plates on a stick and just generally look like a complete clown in our circus workshop!

WasteAid Recycle Workshops

WasteAid Recycle Workshops

WasteAid is a charity that spreads recycling around the world, creating jobs and stopping plastic reaching the oceans. They’ll be demonstrating how to make recycling fun, utilising common waste materials you might find around the house – bottles, cans, and anything else you can think of – to create musical instruments, shakers, and much more!

Spin Art

Spin Art

An interactive art experience enjoyed by all the family. Make your own unique piece of art on either a ten inch square canvas or, if you’re feeling brave enough, something much larger. We’ll have so many colours to choose from – plus BIODEGRADABLE GLITTER for that extra razzmatazz!

Hula Hoop Hootenanny

Hula Hoop Hootenanny

Join Rosalyn Norford for the Deer Shed 9 Hula Hoop Hootenanny, an outdoor circus show that proves anything is possible through gravity-defying stunts and mind-bending hula moves. After the show, try your hand at some of the awesome tricks you just watched – just don’t let dad get his tummy stuck!

Tooth Fairy Friend

Tooth Fairy Friend

A new initiative flying straight out of tooth fairy HQ. The ‘Tooth Fairy Friend’ allows for quick and easy access to those milk teeth without the hazard of being squashed by pillows or the threat of wrestling with teddy bears. The kids will love placing their tooth into the snug, little pouch before discovering their shiny payment the next morning. To the bank!

Festival Sea Sock-Slugs

Festival Sea Sock-Slugs

From the deepest crevasses of the darkest oceans dwell the mysterious yet surprisingly affectionate sock slugs - unloved and forgotten odd socks seeking tranquillity and friendship in your home. We’re giving hundreds of odd socks the opportunity to be wanted and loved again. How cute, crazy, or scary can you make yours? The best festival night-time pal.

The Fishy Wishing Wave

The Fishy Wishing Wave

Do you have dreams, hopes, fears and desires? Us too! Join us in writing them down on a pre-loved CD to help make our wave awash with sun-kissed, shimmering wishes for the breeze to read and take to fate.

Clay Fish

Clay Fish

Ever admired those artsy pottery fish hanging up in small, exclusive craft shops before screwing your nose up at the price? If yes, then this is the workshop for you! Armed with a rolling pin, board and knife, create your own designer fish, leave it with us to dry overnight, ready to take it home to hang proudly in your kitchen, bathroom or garden.

Worry Pets

Worry Pets

So we’ve got rid of our worries on the wishing wave and are ready to enjoy the festival, but what happens later? Taking inspiration from our Guatemalan friends who believe that whispering our sorrows, fears or worries to small dolls takes the sadness away, we’ve come up with ‘Worry Pets’. A squidgy, cute and cuddly creature capable of taking on as many worries as required. Every little thing is gonna be alright.

Fanciful Fish

Fanciful Fish

Who knows what wondrous creatures lie at the bottom of the deepest, darkest lakes and oceans. Delve into the strangest depths of your prefrontal cortex (that’s your imagination, to you and me) to create your very own piscine sculpture. Using old plastic bottles, card and a variety of patterned papers let your imagination float away with the drift.

Fish Art

Fish Art

Inspired by driftwood artwork, Deer Shed have sourced hundreds of bespoke pieces of wood all with a long and unique history – if not directly from the sea. Perfect to use as a blank canvas to create your own beautiful pieces of art.

Shaker Style Beach Huts

Shaker Style Beach Huts

Some of our favourite memories are those of family beach holidays, swimming in the sea, and struggling to get dry and de-sanded behind a towel whilst mum also de-sanded the sandwiches. Wouldn’t it be lovely to have your very own beach hut to change in and shelter from the wind? Whilst we can't stretch to one of those, we have taken inspiration from our Shaker friends to make these simple yet beautifully scented, ornamental beach huts.

Robotic Hands

Robotic Hands

All super heroes have unique powers: some are born with them like Thor, some have it thrust upon them like Spiderman and others are just rich enough to buy their powers like Iron Man or Batman! We can't promise you Marvel-status, but we do think these robotic hands are pretty darn cool. Have an apocalyptic battle whilst listening to ‘End Times’ by Warm Digits!

Diving Helmets

Diving Helmets

Due to a distinct lack of coastline in Topcliffe, we’re unable to bring you a fully underwater festival. We have however created the next best thing! With your very own diving helmet (circa 1800s, or a more high-tech model if you prefer), you can experience Deer Shed as a daring deep sea explorer.

Fish Tanks

Fish Tanks

There’s a certain therapeutic quality to staring into the tranquillity of a fish tank, though the cleaning part rather sucks. If you agree, then our fish tank workshop is right for you. No feeding, no cleaning, but all the fun: the perfect pets!

Build a Boat

Build a Boat

Ever wanted to be the commander of a pirate ship on the high seas? The wind in your hair, just like Jack and Rose. Awaken your inner engineer to design and build your very own boat with a range of recycled materials before taking it out on our treacherous pool. Just make sure this one really is unsinkable!

Lino Printing

Sarah and Liz, two of our trusted artists in residence, are returning to Deer Shed once again. This time they’ll be teaching you the beautiful art of lino painting.

Fabric Bird

Sewing is an amazing skill to learn. From stitching up your favourite, but falling apart, pair of pants to making your own awesome fabric creations. Learn the ways of the sewing machine by crafting some beautiful fabric birds with our very own sweing expert, Katie Bird.

Acrylic Marbling

Acrylic Marbling

Led by the supremely talented art student Lucy, acrylic marbling is a mesmerising art form which is both a creative and therapeutic.

Letter Decoupage

Letter Decoupage

Why spend a fortune at a craft stall for a 3D letter for your door or bedroom shelf when you can have all the fun making and decorating your own at Deer Shed for a fraction of the price!?

Fish Page Art

Fish Page Art

Since the dawn of the Internet, the amount of unloved and unread old books is increasing year on year. We hope you do still find a little time to read them, but if they are just sitting on the shelf collecting dust, we'll teach you to use the pages to create some beautiful watercolour works of art!
