Workshops

As usual, far too many workshops

Loads of crafty, relaxing, energetic and arty workshops to take part in at Deer Shed in July, and all FREE to boot :)

Matthew Bourne New Adventures & Re: Bourne

Matthew Bourne New Adventures & Re: Bourne

Mixing popular appeal with a ground-breaking, unique theatrical language, wonderful dancers and high-quality production values, Matthew Bourne's New Adventures is one of the great success stories of British theatre and has notched up numerous international awards and this year won a Laurence Olivier award. Matthew Bourne is known for spotting talent in the most unlikely of places – sometimes even in people who have never even danced on stage before – and now the company is heading to the Deer Shed Festival to impart its wisdom. The workshops this year will be based on Matthew Bourne’s production of The Red Shoes and Cinderella.

Enchanted Woodland Mural

At #DeerShed8, the Leeds City College Arty Stuff team will be producing a woodland mural full of all the flora and fauna you can imagine - and you can join in. Armed with paint and brushes, and maybe a little touch of Wilderwild magic, you can unleash the artist inside of you as you help produce this latest stroke of genius in the Deer Shed Masterpiece Collection. Rumour has it that last year’s stunning mural boke the million pound mark at auction...

Land of the Giants Photoshoot

Land of the Giants Photoshoot

Using your own (or a grown-ups, if they’re willing to trust you) camera or mobile phone, the Leeds City College photo team will take you on a tour of Baldersby Park to photograph creatures of The Wilderwild in their natural habitat. So if you've always wanted to be the next David Attenborough, come along and join the expedition to document these wild and wonderful creatures. Don't worry - they don't bite! It’s like Pokémon Snap on Nintendo 64, but for Wilderwild critters. Ah, the ‘90s...

Avatar Mask Workshop

Avatar Mask Workshop

Games design wizards from Leeds City College will be joining us this year with their computers and technical magic to help you create your own Avatar Mask. Have your photograph taken then play around with some digital wizardry, and before you know it, Bob's your uncle, you've turned your face into a digital clone of yourself that you can wear whilst you stroll disguised around the festival.

Hunt For Your Spirit Animal with West Yorkshire Playhouse

Hunt For Your Spirit Animal with West Yorkshire Playhouse

Ever been jealous of the birds soaring freely through the sky? Ever wished you could run as fast as a cheetah? Maybe you just wish you could relax all day, moving at one mile an hour, like a sloth! Our good friends at West Yorkshire Playhouse will present an acting workshop where you are tasked with hunting for, and channelling, your inner spirit animal. Hmm… I think I’d be the walrus.

Dance City Flash Mob

Dance City Flash Mob

Dance City is a vibrant and friendly place where people come together to take part, enjoy, experience and talk about dance; where professional and aspiring dancers meet, learn and train; somewhere to watch world class dance performances and somewhere for all to come along and get involved in dance. They will be heading to #DeerShed8 to choreograph our second ever flash mob, following the success of last year. A little birdie told us that Ibibio Sound Machine could be in on the plan too, but you’ll have to Give Me a Reason to believe such a wild rumour!

ComedySportz UK Improv Workshop

ComedySportz UK Improv Workshop

ComedySportz UK is a fast-paced improv comedy show where two teams battle it out for the biggest laughs. The players create quick witted sketches, scenes and songs from whatever suggestions are thrown at them by the audience to create a show that’s fast, feel-good and always unpredictably funny. Think Whose Line Is It Anyway, if the performers had downed ten cans of energy drink each before they took the stage. They will be leading an improvisation workshop so Deer Shedders can learn the art of fast and funny thinking.

Rock school UK Samba Drumming

Rock School UK Samba Drumming

Rock School UK brings the sounds of Brazil to Deer Shed! Join in with this exciting drumming session and have the opportunity to play a range of Brazilian drums and hand percussion. You will learn how to play all the instruments, memorise some call and response passages, before putting it all together with a traditional Samba Reggae groove. Workshops are heaps of fun for the whole family from tots all the way up to Grandad!

Rock School UK Junk Funk drumming

Rock School UK Junk Funk drumming

Junk Funk pushes creative boundaries, giving participants the opportunity to really express themselves by experimenting with new sounds and to see the rhythm possibilities in objects such as step ladders, buckets and baking trays. By adding in Rock School UK’s unique Scrap Raps, you will rap about the junk and the funk. This makes for a really fun and energetic session that will leave you feeling upbeat and creative. Our hard hats, highly visible jackets will get you looking the part and ready to funk that junk and rap about that scrap!

Rock School UK Air Guitar Championships

Rock School UK Air Guitar Championships

Hendrix, Marr, Page. We all fancy ourselves as a bit of a guitar god when alone in our bedrooms, rocking out to our favourite tunes. We will be hosting the Air Guitar Championships, meaning you can fulfil your wildest dreams and play a set at #DeerShed8 with nothing but your imagination, wicked moves, and a crowd to roar you on. What will be your signature move: the power stance; sliding on your knees; the windmill? For those about to rock, we salute you!

Lake Poets Song writing Workshop

Lake Poets Song writing Workshop

The Lake Poets is the alias for singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Martin Longstaff from Sunderland. At the age of just 24, Martin has already supported giants of the UK music scene, such as Tom Jones, James Morrison, Jake Bugg and Lucy Rose, and he will be sharing the secret to his song-writing success in a workshop prior to his Sunday afternoon set on the Lodge Stage.

Gong Bath

Gong Bath

Sound and music can have a profound impact on our emotions and state of mind. Listening to your favourite song can sometimes feel like being hugged by an old friend, or have the same relaxing effect of taking a long, hot soak in the bath tub. Our Gong Bath workshop takes its name from that very sensation! Immerse yourself in the sound of the gong to help concentrate the mind and ease the troubles of the soul.

Drumnbounce

Drumnbounce

Rejoice: your festival workout has arrived! Bring all the family down for a friendly and uplifting dance around to drum & bass. In this energetic workshop, Drumnbounce want to share their moves and get you hyped for the day. Join Emily the instructor to get warmed up, reach a healthy high, then dubstretch out. Good things come to those who bounce. Join them - you'll see!

Hula Hooping

Hula Hooping

Hula Hooping seems to have become something you simply can't leave a festival without having had a go at. If you look across the green fields of Deer Shed, chances are you’ll see someone rotating their hips to keep the hoop hovering. There’s always someone that just can’t get the hang of it, though (usually a dad). We will therefore present a hula hooping workshop at #DeerShed8 so that everyone can hula ‘til their heart's content.

Go Yoga presents The Silent Yoga Experience with Tim Ineaux

Go Yoga presents The Silent Yoga Experience with Tim Ineaux

As well as standard yoga classes, Go Yoga will lead a silent yoga workshop. Silent yoga is much the same idea as a silent disco, except there’s less dancing and more mindful relaxation, stretching and exercise. You will be provided with a set of headphones to listen to the awe-inspiring DJ-ing of Tim Ineaux, before being talked through some amazing moves by Go Yoga’s professionally trained instructors. Tim’s projected visuals were hugely popular during his 2016 set, and we’re looking forward to what we can feast our eyes and ears on this year.

Go Yoga presents the UV Rave

Go Yoga presents the UV Rave

And here you were thinking “Silent yoga! What on Earth are those Deer Shedder-Go Yoga kooks going to bring us next?” Well, we’re taking yoga to a whole new level. Adorn yourself, friends and family with glow sticks, grab your glowing paint and smear it across your face, because #DeerShed8 will be hosting a Yoga UV rave. No, your eyes do not deceive you. Yes, you read correctly. Let’s rave.

Circus workshops

Circus workshops

Ever wished wondered just how the clown on a unicycle can possibly ride across a tiny tight rope with consummate ease? Ok, we may not be teaching you anything that extreme, but we’re more than capable of teaching Deer Shedders how to juggle, throw custard pies at bad guys, spin some plates on a stick and just generally look like a complete clown in our circus workshop!

Wild Singing with Sally Egan

Wild Singing with Sally Egan

Remember the glory days of Scouting when you used to embark on a trip to a faraway wood to sit around a campfire eating marshmallows on a stick and singing traditional campfire songs? We’re taking Deer Shedders back to those days! Join Sally Egan for a trip into The Wilderwild to sing with the birds. Classics like Kum Ba Yah and Ging Gang Goo are bound to be brought back to life, while we’re sure you can slip in some songs from main stage headliners. Careful not to disturb the bears, though. They might need to be charmed with your lovely voices...

Shed Talks

Shed Talks

#DeerShed8, in collaboration with Thinking Space, will host Shed Talks: Philosophical stimulation and conversation for thinkers aged 11 – 111. This will consist of a rotation of three philosophy speakers giving thought-provoking eight-minute talks, followed by a series of quick-fire audience participation workshops designed to get small groups talking and thinking about what they've heard. Key ideas from these short discussions will then be fed back to the Thinking Space practitioners who will hold an informal Q&A, led by a compere.

SS dance presents Bharatanatyam workshop

SS dance presents Bharatanatyam workshop

Bharatanatyam is a global dance genre which has its roots in the Indian subcontinent. Dynamic movements in angular patterns and percussive rhythmic structures make it one of the most fascinating dance forms in the world. Every movement of Bharatanatyam is executed with evocative hand gestures and focused movements of the eyes. Come and enjoy a workshop on Bharatanatyam which make you feel funky and energetic.

Breathing circles and meditation

Breathing circles and meditation

It’s important at every family outing, including at music festivals, to have a little bit of down time for relaxation. Reflect on the weekend activities in our breathing circles and meditation workshop. We know the hustle and bustle can sometimes get a little tiring, so you can sit down in a calm environment to recharge and reenergise in time for the rest of the weekend.

Cardboard Masks

Cardboard Masks

As well as learning all about the natural world of The Wilderwild, you can also join its animal kingdom. Disguise yourself as a bear, owl, fox, or any other animal you wish you could be in another life. Cardboard masks are the way to go, and you can create your own in our super workshop. It’s a shame to cover those beautiful faces, but these are seriously cool.

Head Dressers Nature Crowns

Head Dressers / Nature Crowns

Nature is a little bit nice, isn’t it? So much so that you can wear it as an accessory! We’re thinking back to the halcyon days of daisy chains and other lovely flowery creations. Come and visit the head dressers in the Pixie Hollow tent who will help you make your own head accessory from completely natural resources.

Hobby Horse

Hobby Horse

On offer in the #DeerShed8 sports arena is hobby horse polo, a cheap and cheerful version of the original game played by super rich aristocrats on horseback (real, not wooden, as with our variation). But who brings a wooden stick with a horse head stuck on the end to a festival? Oddballs, largely. This is why you can make a hobby horse in our dedicated workshop, before showing those aristocrats just how it’s done.

Pom-Pom Creatures

Pom-Pom Creatures

As if pom-pom bunting isn't enough to satisfy your desire to create anything under the sun made out of pom-poms, the festival will also offer a pom-pom creature-making workshop. It's up to you to decide what you bring to life, but we’re hoping there will be more than a few Wilderwild themed creatures on show.

Head Sculptures

Woodland Tribal Heads

For the most part, The Wilderwild is a wondrous place filled with friends and adventure for Deer Shedders to explore. There are whispers, though, that everything may not be as it seems. We heard it through the grapevine that evil spirits are on the horizon, looking for an opportunity to spoil our fiesta. In response, we have developed a workshop dedicated to making woodland tribal heads, which are said to ward any ghastly ghouls.

Worry Dolls

Worry Dolls

What are festivals for if not forgetting your worries, banishing the blues and being happy? Worry dolls originate from Guatemalan and Mexican traditions, and are given to children for them to tell the dolls of any sorrows, fears or worries. After spending a night under the child’s pillow, the worry dolls are supposed to have taken any sadness away by the next morning. We’re certainly not expecting any long faces at #DeerShed8, but our worry doll workshop will make absolutely sure of it!

Fairy Houses

Fairy Houses

Magic promises to be in the air throughout #DeerShed8, which means we're expecting many fairies on the guest list. They're not as keen on camping in tents as most Deer Shedders, though. This means there could be quite the demand for affordable fairy housing at Baldersby Park in July, so we’ll be looking for some crafty builders to help construct some and maybe take them home after the party when the fairies move out.

Willow Hearts, Fish, Tissues & Leavess

Willow Hearts, Fish, Tissues & Leaves

One of the most loved traits of the willow tree is its flexibility, letting us create many symbols and structures out of its branches. We’re taking full advantage of this quality with workshops teaching you how to create your own art pieces out of willow. You can make willow leaves and hearts to give to loved ones or willow fish, which might not be the best swimmers, but they sure will look lovely on your wall at home!

Cardboard Shields

Cardboard Shields

There may be many beasties and creatures wandering around The Wilderwild – it is their home after all! Most will want to befriend and teach you about the wonders of nature. One or two, though, might not be so ready to welcome you into the woods. Worry not: we will offer a workshop where you can build your own cardboard shield to fend off any of these unwanted wild things.

Cardboard Guitars

Cardboard Guitars

We're hoping our awesome #DeerShed8 music line-up will inspire the next generation of rock and pop legends to pick up a guitar (or any other instrument they so desire) and begin their journey towards musical greatness. A workshop helping young people to build a cardboard guitar is the first step, with the last step being grabbing that mainstage headline slot at Deer Shed Festival 30. Watch your back, Mr Hannon!

Bird Feeders

Bird Feeders

Baldersby Park is brimming with bird life all year round. Sometimes, though, the festival atmosphere can make the birdies a little more cautious about showing their beaks in July. Deer Shedders can now make up for this by offering them food from the bird feeders they are able to create on-site. And when the festival finishes, you can take them to show the birds back at home the same kind of love. Food makes friendships!

Sun Print Art

Sun Print Art

A photogram is a picture produced without a camera. “How is that possible!?” we hear the young’uns cry. Well… first we make a stencil to place above some light sensitive paper, then we place it all under a small ultra-violet (the electromagnetic radiation found in sunlight) lamp, before dipping it in water to develop a print. Voila, you have a photogram! A slightly more detailed, scientific explanation can be found here.

Lanterns

Lanterns

It's 4am in the campsite. You've been asleep for three hours and you awake desperate for the loo. No mobile phone battery, and the torch is bust. Luckily, those lovely helpers in the arts workshop tent helped you to make your very own personalised lantern, which lights the way to the lavatory in the wee hours. As well as illuminating your path in the dark, our lanterns will also look lovely hung up in your home or garden.

Clay Tree Faces

Clay Tree Faces

Every tree in The Wilderwild has its own unique personality, just like each Deer Shedder. Some are old, some young; some are Ent-like giants filled with wisdom, some are little more than saplings. Now you can put a face to the personality by making a clay tree face for your favourite tree in Baldersby Park.

Star Tissue Sun Catchers

Star Tissue Sun Catchers

At last year's Deer Shed, the sun was blushing and Baldersby Park was balmy all weekend. We're counting on the same again this year (touch wood), and are planning to utilise the sunshine in our workshops. Star Tissue Sun Catchers will look lovely hung up around the festival site, and also make beautiful home decorations. Here comes the sun, do do do do...

Pom-Pom Bunting

Pom-Pom Bunting

Bunting is the favourite decoration of many a festival. It adorns tents and stages, making everything looks that little bit prettier. In true Deer Shed style of not wanting to stray too far from festival tradition whilst always striving for that special twist, we will be helping you to make bunting made of pom-poms. You can add your own unique decorations to the festival site or keep them hold of them to hang at home.

Friendship Bracelets

Friendship Bracelets

Deer Shed Festival is a place where lifelong friendships are made whether you're younger, older or somewhere in between. What better way to symbolise new friendships than by making your own friendship bracelets in our workshop? Customise the bracelets with your own patterns, letters and colours to show how truly unique each new and old friendship is and exactly what they mean to you.

Acorn Painting

Acorn Painting

We're trying to make the most of all the natural wonders found in The Wilderwild. Something that is in abundance down in the woods is the simple acorn. No longer just the squirrel's dinner, we’re offering a workshop where you can pick up your own acorn (or one of our pre-collected ones) and paint it with as many patterns and pretty colours as you can possibly imagine.
