Under 5s

Fun stuff and practical stuff

We get asked quite a lot what Deer Shed provides for the peace and well-being of our under 5 audience. So here goes...

Meadow Sensory Tent

Meadow Sensory Tent

There is so much going on at the Deer Shed Festival that sometimes you might need a little retreat from the bustling arena. Imagine the most serene scene you possibly can, and you might arrive at a place nearly as relaxing as our Meadow Sensory Tent. Here, you can take part in some yoga or just put your feet up while the young people play with many sensory delights!

Teeny Beans Tent

Teeny Beans Tent

We're over the moon that the Teeny Beans tent will be back for the festival's ninth incarnation. This tent will provide quality sessions for young children and their parents, hosting a parent and baby yoga class, junk modelling, pipe cleaner pet-making, colouring sheets, collage making, sensory play, messy play and much more!

Wavy Mosaic

Wavy Mosaic

Isn’t it great when loads of little things come together to make one much bigger thing? Our masters of mosaic art will be on hand at Deer Shed 9 to help you on the way to making awesome wavy mosaics. You’re not restricted to just making waves, of course, but we’ll be showing them off on our gallery wall!

Pig Sty

Pig Sty

Maybe we should come up with a slightly less offensive name for this area, designed for our littlest friends who just want to go a bit crazy. We fill a small area with loads of hay, toys and geed up kids, and simply watch the magic happen. We won’t let them wallow in any mud, but even kids need to blow off some steam sometimes.

Jane Clack Storytelling

Jane Clack Storytelling

It can’t be overstated how important the books we read as tiny humans are for early stage development. With this in mind, we’ve invited Jane Clack, one of our current favourite children’s authors, to come along and read her beautifully crafted picture books, Hilda the Hippo Who Didn’t Like Being Different and Oscar the Osprey, at Deer Shed 9.

Pipe Cleaner Sea Creatures

Pipe Cleaner Sea Creatures

With the magical bendy property of pipe cleaners, it’s fun and easy to make shapes of pretty much anything you want. We’ve been hard at work making the blue prints for the best possible sea creatures shapes with our massive box of pipe cleaners. They may not be very good at swimming, but they’ll sure look lovely – or scary, depending on your artistic eye – displayed proudly on your window sill.

Boom Chikka Boom Baby Rave

Boom Chikka Boom Baby Rave

Into their 5th year of hosting some of the country's most exciting and innovative family events, Boom Chikka Boom, formally known as Baby Rave North, will be joining us once again for some raving at #DeerShed9. Expect good music, bubbles galore, pompoms, movers, parachute fun, a snow machine and good vibes for the babies and anyone else in the family who feels like shaking the room.

Bath Times

Bath Times

Festivals have quite the label for being a little bit on the grubby side. Not at Deer Shed! On top of our reputation for having the cleanest loos in the land, NCT also kindly provide easily accessible baths so the small people stay squeaky clean!

Ear Defenders

Ear Defenders

Ever left a loud gig or party with that incessant ringing in your ears? Yes, your hardy lugholes might recover in a day or two if you’re lucky, but little ears are much more fragile. Our high-fidelity PA speakers produce some glorious sounds, but some of them might upset those little lugholes. If the kids don’t already have ear protection, make sure you pick up a pair of ear defenders from our merchandise tent to keep those high frequencies at bay.

Sing and Sign

Sing and Sign

Join us for a fun musical adventure under the sea whilst learning some great signs useful for the seaside, bath time or for when sharing your favourite beachy book! 'Sing and Sign' is the U.K.'s original baby signing programme, informing and delighting parents and babies across the country for nearly two decades. Expect singing, signing, boats, bubbles, smiles, giggles and a very special, sea faring, cat called Jessie!

NCT (National Childbirth Trust)

NCT (National Childbirth Trust)

#DeerShed9 will see the welcome return of NCT. They will have a dedicated NCT tent clearly marked onsite located in our Obelisk area that will cater for a variety of your welfare needs, particularly for parents with younger children.

Pip Theatre

Pip Theatre

Pip Theatre is an innovative arts organisation sowing the seeds within the local community to create, educate and connect. Returning to Deer Shed for a second year, Pip will be encouraging our mini Deer Shedders to get creative on a voyage into the world of waves. Their magical stories will be tailored to inspire the budding imaginations of our littlest guests!

Sensory Sessions – Create Together

Sensory Sessions – Create Together

A delightful drop-in sensory space for little ones and their families run by the wonderful art therapists at Create Together. They offer a comfy, chilled out space which will always have loads of sensory materials and toys with textures, lights and sounds. Each day they’ll build a totally unique sensory world tray themed around the sea and simple craft activities ideal for little ones. Create wave makers, oceans-in-a-bottle and handprint sea creatures!

Soul Sensory

Soul Sensory

'Soul Sensory' was dreamt up by a mother who has spent many years thinking of ways to help her child and others who have autism access exciting events, without the risk of sensory overload. The sensory activities are carefully thought out to provide calming activities, like hand-crafted wooden letter painting, a giant chalk board and a Duplo building table.

Sand Pit

Sand Pit

Eight tons of play sand undercover and exclusively reserved for our younger audience. Build a monster, a castle, or anything else the sand and your imagination will allow. One toddler was once so excited their sandcastle stood up unaided that they did an impromptu victory dance - awesome! We're very pro-impromptu victory dances at the Deer Shed Festival!

Soft Play

Soft Play

You know what you're going to get with a soft play area: fun slides, cubes, and other shapes for the little ones to spend hours of fun playing on. Sometimes we wonder if we should give up with the bands and comedy and simply host a giant soft play area festival!

Microwave

Microwave

Yes, #DeerShed9 will host some of the best street food vendors mankind has ever tasted, but try giving a korma from Ghandi’s Flip-Flop or a falafel burger from The Green Canteen to a 1-year old – not ideal! We will offer an abundance of microwaves so you can keep the tots well fed with food that suits them best.

Bottle Sterilising Facilities

Bottle Sterilising Facilities

As parents ourselves, we know how important it is to have peace of mind when feeding your baby. That’s why #DeerShed9 will provide bottle sterilising facilities: to ensure no bugs can make their way into any tummies.

High Chairs

High Chairs

Babies can be just a little bit demanding, right? Often if they're not sat in their high chair thrones, they’ll kick up a fuss or make more of a mess. Worry not: babies are treated like royalty at the Deer Shed Festival and no little prince or princess that wants one will be without a high chair!

Changing Area

Changing Area

Picture the scene: you and the family are at the main stage, all moving and shaking to Goldfrapp, when suddenly an unsavoury smell emanates from the little one's nappy. Luckily, our changing area is always just around the corner and you'll likely be back in time to hear Ooh La La – how's that for a crowd pleaser?

Rhythm Time Second Language Learning

Rhythm Time

The creators of Rhythm Time wanted to share the benefits and fun of early music making with parents and children. Today over 11,000 children enjoy their classes every week throughout the country. They’re heading to North Yorkshire this summer to encourage mini Deer Shedders to make musical sounds by any means necessary! Banging drums, strumming stringed things and pretty much anything else you can think of that will strike a nice chord!

Nappies

Nappies

If you’re bringing a toddler to Baldersby Park this July, it would be a total nightmare realising you'd left the nappies in the car or – far worse – at home! These things happen, but Deer Shed has you and your baby’s backs covered (literally) with biodegradable, eco-friendly nappies on sale in both the campsite and arena.

Bambini Lingo

Bambini Lingo Second Language Learning

Rote instruction on rigid rules and structures is no way to teach small kids a second language. Instead, we’ll immerse mini Deer Shedders in other languages through a fun, musical and play-based environment. Kids become so enthralled by the Bambini Lingo experience that they don’t even realise they’re learning.

Mobile Sling Hire

Mobile Sling Hire

There's so much on offer at #DeerShed9 that you might have to undertake some light walking. Of course, this can quite quickly become heavy walking if you have your hands full with one or more children. Parent Deer Shedders can therefore hire mobile slings from NCT to make your festival experience as easy on the arms and legs as possible.

Storytelling

Storytelling

In addition to what we reckon could be our best ever literary and spoken word line-up, we have a whole host of skilled story tellers to amaze both youngsters and parents. Mud Pie Arts, Solstice Storytelling, Lorna Mallet and Pip Theatre and many more will be presenting a host of magical tales for all ages.

Messy play

Messy play

Little ones can use hands, feet, sponges, giant stampers and even vegetables to make amazing paint-y creations. We will have a mixture of safe poster paints and food-based paints for the babies who just want to eat everything! Big sheets of paper on the floor make it easy for babies and toddlers to use their whole bodies and become immersed in the painting.

Musical shakers

Musical shakers

This drop-in workshop gives little ones chance to shake, rattle, and bang to their heart's content. Including rhymes, songs, and a variety of instruments, this is the magical, musical moment every under-5 has been looking for.

Parent and toddler yoga

Parent and toddler yoga

Enjoy all the benefits of Yoga with the whole family. Babies all the way through to grans and grandads are welcome to join this inclusive introductory yoga session which will be provide fun for all the family, led by Go Yoga from Harrogate.
